Good to see you're continuing to put out interesting video essays, it's just nice to have something that covers the cultural piece and not just the economic lens of the present. It's funny because there are a few brutalist buildings in denver that I think look very unique (the treasury, for example), and most people think they're repulsive looking, but now I have a better reason as to why: they don't get cleaned the way some of these other buildings do. Likewise there's the one river north apt building: built on the skeleton of an arts college and visually dissapointing. milehighcre.com/one-river-north-defining-the-future-of-real-estate/ The renders imply tropical, non local plants in the gash it has. However I can say as someone who drives past it every work day it has none, and wont. The starting rate for the apts is also prohibitively expensive

Interesting video. I do have to point out that Adorno, being a classically trained pianist, thought that the twelve-tone system (particularly as expressed in Schoenberg's music) was the pinnacle of harmony and contained the musical equivalent of critical consciousness. Keeping that in mind, he would have likely considered that these bands were all producing "anti-art" I'm not trying to discard a marxist analysis given how many groups you mentioned openly embraced leftist politics, but would it be fair to say that a mentionable chunk of post-punk groups expressed nihilism and even reactionary aesthethics? Joy Division's name origin is very edgy (look it up yourself if you don't know). Cure's early work, starting from "Seventeen Seconds" particularly, is pretty interpersonal and likewise pretty edgy. "Pornograhy" is certainly open to an interpretation of anti-consumerism, but it can be also interpreted as a warning against drugs and casual sex. Even Gang of Four's song "Damaged Good" displays a certain type of chauvinistic reaction to sexual liberation. Then there's the freak outlier, Death in June. The frontman, Douglas P was a leftie in his younger days, but came to embrace national bolshevism later. He downright fetishisizes militarism, fascist iconograhy, greek mythology i.e. Then of course there's Swans, which isn't political music to be clear, but their 80's work especially is quite agressive and brutal, and the music is paired with lyrics dealing mostly with authority, sex, violence, hierarchy i.e

Identity politics is an ethical assertion and not a passive definition. Identities exist because they are made by social actions. For example Black People are Black because they are treated as such in society. Civil right movement is the ethical project of reducing injustice to people, regardless of identity put against others.

Of the three philosophical foundations of Communism, only a 'moneyless' society is reasonably possible. Barter works when small groups of people are involved. Having no 'classes' or 'state' is absurd. This is akin to having a 'desireless' society or 'meaningless' society. These tenets do not comport with human interaction and organization in groups, starting with families.

I can understand how neoliberalism has plagued the cultural scene, but your observations on the soviet bloc are entirely a western observation. As a Bulgarian I'll make a few points about my own country and culture under socialism and beyond. As another commenter said eastern bloc artists often conflated their freedom of expression with capitalism and there was a bit of wishful thinking with it. Good and culturally significant bands were all from the 80s. There's a bit of truth to this, but the state also massively censored the hip bands from the 80s so they don't outperform the publicly funded Estrada genre bands and musicians. And we're still a bit plagued by those same genres and how the musicians expect things to happen to this day. I also think that a lot of what made those bands amazing was them rebelling against the state and how the state repressed or tried to ignore them. As for architecture the recently demolished Monument of the Soviety Army in Sofia was famously built by people who emigrated abroad (escaped as we call it) or even did the monument so their personal relations were unofficially recognized (in the case of Mara Georgieva and Vaska Emanuilova who were in a relationship). The model for one of the statues was an unemployed man who's parents were repressed and could not get another job except for modelling for artists. As for another demolished monument (the name of which eludes me as well as the artist) the artist finished the monument and immigrated to the west. The space in front of these spaces and brutalist architecture has often been a cultural youth center but more often in spite of it rather than because it. As for cinema, again wishful thinking this time from George Lucas. Artists in the soviet bloc faced a lot of censorship, tho in a different way that he did. All in all great video. After the bloc fell we're struggling to produce culturally significant things that aren't nostalgia bait. We got duped that the future we wanted was going to happen.

i’m interested in the FBI’s definition of far right terrorism, is this Hammerskin Nation conducting attacks? Aryan Brotherhood? Blood and Honor? or is it lone wolfs that are conveniently white and racist. everyone is a white supremacist nowadays including non whites apparently so yes i’m cynical. You want to talk about left wing terrorism let’s talk about antifa, or those with gender identity disorder going into schools and ending up in the news for a national tragedy.

It makes sense how since the post-great recession years we've seen a re-surgence in post punk in it's rawest, least compromising form (Protomartyr, Viagra Boys, Viet Cong/Preoccupations, Savages and lately Yard Act, shame and Dry Cleaning). The last two generations are experiencing the grim consequences of Reagan/Thatcher era policies and seek to re-kindle the lost futures that the early Post-Punk bands envisioned

Art needs to be popular. This is not a "capitalistic" thing, as you appear to imply here. It's a human thing. You need to spend your time producing value to society, if you want to have an artistic occupation, your production must be appealing to an audience large enough that it justifies it's existence. If you want to do art with profound meaning, you have to be able to convey that meaning through GREAT art first. You need to be excellent even to have the opportunity to propagate your message. See your own videos as an example of that. When that is not true, the solution is always unsustainable, like the government subsidizing art that can't exist without it's subsidies. Or artists counting on patron's generosity to continue producing. It is a reality of the world, for good or for ill, and I will make an argument seemingly for the contrary now: Take Nietzsche for as example, I love him, he is my favorite writer, if he was alive today and wrote a new book I would gladly pay a thousand dollars on a volume. That is not because the book itself is worth that, but because I treasure what he writes and at the same time I understand what he writes doesn't have a mass appeal and that the audience, his audience, is necessarily small due to the impermeability of his work to the average IQ person. But even If I did that, and again, I gladly would, and even if there were 10, 20 or 30 others like me, he would still struggle to survive (as he did when he was alive), depending on such limited audience. There is a practical necessity for an artist to be popular.
